The play The Sea is a play set in 1900 in a remote coastal village. The sea seems to surround the village, inescapable and ever-changing. A local man drowns in the sea leading to fear and madness as the villagers contemplate what it might mean and what changes the new century may have in store. Right at the end of the play Evens, once a member of the upper class but now a drop-out living on the beach, reflects on how nothing stands still in the universe, and how life is much bigger and richer than anyone in the village has ever thought.

It seemed an appropriate piece to celebrate Carlton’s anniversary. The play is a sometimes funny, sometimes poignant little piece about a jovial traffic cop who develops an attraction for a young female motorist who drives too fast...
